SAFETY TIPS.
LIGHTEN UP
Leave your outside lights on at night. If your neighbourhood is dimly lit, ask your local corporation or authorities to add streetlights or replace existing bulbs with ones of higher voltage. Leave one or two lamps on inside your house when you’re not at home (preferably on a random timer/activator)
LOCK UP
Reliable dead-bolt door locks and sturdy window latches help prevent break-ins
TRIM THE HEDGES
Tall hedges can provide hiding places for would-be burglars, cut regularly
KEY SECURITY
When you move house change all locks on doors. Anybody could have been given a key by a previous owner. Never leave keys near a window or door – thieves can easily use
a fishing net or magnet to get them. Decide on a safe place for keys and know where you can find them in an emergency
BE CAREFUL WITH SPARE KEYS
We recommend that you never leave a spare key outside. However if you do then be creative. Burglars routinely check under flowerpots and welcome mats and on window ledges
MAKE YOUR MARK
Permanently mark your valuable to make it easier for the police to return them to you if they are stolen. Car registration numbers or a driver’s license number work well here. Keep
a record of marked objects
MAKE NOISE
Tune the stereo or TV to your favourite station when you leave the house. To a burglar it means that someone’s home
NO NOTES
Never leave notes on your door, even when you’re at home. If you are planning to be away for any length of time, cancel milk and paper deliveries
PARK IN THE DRIVEWAY
Park an additional car in your driveway or ask a neighbour to park there. It gives the appearance that someone’s always home and prevents burglars from backing a van into the
drive for easy loading
